Terracotta portraits. Gayle Fichtinger is a ceramic
sculptor who lives and works in New London, New

Her most recent still-life objects of split logs
exhibit a concern for realistic detail while emphasizing
a kind of natural history. As sculptural
objects, the logs are modeled from lifelike portraits.
As in a portrait, history is revealed in each
log by the accumulation of clues: bark patterns,
growth rings, scars, saw cuts, lichens, moss, and
the chewing marks left by insects.
