December 17–January 27: HORIZONS: Five diverse artists who have a
distinctive and artistic response to landscape painting will be on display
at the Flinn Gallery. The artists are Frances B. Ashforth, Diana
Friedman-Shea, Yuka Imata, Kathryn Sanfilippo, and Cheryl Warrick.
Ashforth’s horizon landscapes show her strong interest in line, color,
edges, and boundaries. Friedman-Shea’s works are between realism and
abstraction in her open ended urban paintings. Imata’s oft and classical
landscapes of the Spanish countryside are in contrast to Sanfilippo’s
abstract landscapes of bold colors and broad strokes. Warrick’s quilt like
landscapes blended with folk wisdom and symbols tells a story of inner
meaning. Opening Thursday December 17, 6–8 p.m.

back to us?” Her drawings and paintings team with life of the strangest
variety presenting nature as dynamic, ambiguous characters. Cammarata says,
“My drawings are imaginary worlds, but rather than confront, they provoke
mystery.” Deep Space: Recent Paintings and Drawings by Kathleen Cammarata

Galleries: Tobias Putrih & MOS: Without Out: Sculptural practice and
architectural design are the subjects of this exhibition organized by List
Visual Arts Center director Jane Farver. In his work, Tobias Putrih uses
everyday materials such as cardboard, Styrofoam™, and plywood to produce
fragile structures that span from small modular objects to larger
installation environments. Recent work has featured Putrih's collaboration
with MOS, a collective of designers and architects that creates software and
uses customized tools of parametric design to produce simple but highly
complex structures and buildings. The two principals, Michael Meredith and
Hilary Sample, teach at Harvard University and Yale University while
maintaining the practice. Putrih's and Meredith's exhibition at the List
Visual Arts Center will feature a newly commissioned work, Erosion, a
large-scale sculptural installation whose structural design is premised on
its inevitable ruination. In addition, working drawings, models, and other
support materials will further illuminate the collaboration between Putrih
and MOS. Bakalar Gallery: Sung Hwan Kim's Summer Days in Keijo-written in
1937 (2007): Sung Hwan Kim often integrates video and performance art, and
takes on the role of director, editor, performer, composer, narrator, and
writer to create works that are narrative yet dreamlike. His Summer Days in Keijo-written in 1937 is a fictional documentary based on Swedish
ethnographer and zoologist Sten Bergman's 1937 travelogue In Korean Wilds
and Villages.

The exhibit, Celebrating the Season: Icons of Saint Nicholas, will
place eleven Saint Nicholas icons together in the upper South Gallery on
display to the public for the first time, including the first icon acquired
by museum founder Gordon Lankton in 1991. Visitors will be able to see and
compare more than works spanning four centuries, with fourteen others shown
throughout the Museum. Saint Nicholas was known to be wise and performed
good works in secret for the poor and the oppressed. His many deeds entered
the realm of myth and contribute to stories of Father Christmas, St. Nick,
and ultimately, Santa Claus. A newly acquired piece, dating from 1880, (see
image below) will be displayed in the way that Russian Orthodox believers
are accustomed to viewing icons–encased in an outer wooden frame or kiot,
and covered with an ornately engraved screen or riza, revealing only the
face and hands of the saint. The icon features an elaborate, gilded kiot
with grape-leaf motif and silver riza.

Through December 18, 2009: GJYD: Just as the banishment of illusion enhances
awareness, so the demolition of aesthetic bling sweetens the world of
discourse, of the Other. GJYD serves only consciousness, attentiveness,
awareness. GJYD can never seek power—only release it. Don't
picket—vandalize. Don't protest—deface. When ugliness, poor design & stupid
waste are forced upon you, turn Luddite, throw your shoe in the works,
retaliate. Smash the symbols of the Empire in the name of nothing. January
19– February 19: Malcolm Montague Davis: Malcolm Montague Davis'
abstract paintings are based on details of his buildings and sculpture. The
paintings are a portion of a much larger architectural drawing which has
been surveyed to yield stimulating compositions. The artist makes color
paper maquettes to study the proportions and color relationships. From these
paper studies, candidates are culled to be enlarged into paintings. A single
building may result in several paintings depicting its diverse features.

p.m.–7 p.m. What would you bring to live for two years in the Arctic? This
multimedia installation unearths the supply lists of the failed Ziegler
Expedition of 1903. Using images of archival records, the installation
evokes the explorers’ faith in and dependence on the most sophisticated
technologies of the time as a means to succeed and advance a human/
cultural/political agenda: for America to be the first to the North Pole.
Are their lessons for our times in their disappointment?
